My first experience with The Hamptons was all highways and hedges on a quick day trip a few years ago. An overpriced meal and pop art gallery event with free drinks. Stalking a celebrity chef until he tucked in to a Starbucks restroom I didn’t get it. What was the fuss about? It’s only on the following trips where I needed to escape the pressure cooker NYC summer before the Memorial day deluge of summer visitors that it clicked. It’s beautiful refuge when the car windows are down. Time doesn’t matter anymore, you can linger over lobster rolls on the side of the country road. The edge of the earth is only as distant as the sound of a crashing wave.
